Tang Soo Do
It is an ancient martial art that originated about 2,000 years ago in Korea. It is one of the oldest forms of karate practiced around the world today. Hwang Kee was the founder of Tang Soo Do.
In the orient some 1,970 years ago, there is mention that a form of fighting called Soo Bahk (Kwon Bop) was being formed or was in existence in the Aeje dynasty of the Han Empire in China. About 1,700 years ago in Korea, it was seen that during the early part of the Kokuryo dynasty, there was indeed a grapple which was called Soo Bahk, Tack Kyun and Kwon Bop. These facts still remain in many written sources, mural paintings, and the archaeological remains even today.
Soon after its development in China, this early version of the art presented itself in the Korean peninsula. Korea, at that time was divided into three separate kingdoms, and each had developed Soo Bahk or Kwon Bop on their own. Grand Master Hwang Kee was an expert of traditional Soo Bahk Ki and he encountered the Chinese variation of this art form called the Tang method.
So by combining some of the Chinese Tang methods with those that he was already a master in, namely Soo Bahk Ki, Grand Master Hwang Kee devised a system of fighting which he brought back to his homeland at the end of Word War II. He went on to call this system of fighting Tang Soo Do, in honor of the Chinese art. This is the first time the word Tang Soo Do was used officially. Tang Soo Do is one of the best martial arts in the world is sometimes misinterpreted as a part of Japanese karate by some theorists.
