Brazilian Jiu Jutsu

In the early 1900's the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was created by a man called Helio Gracie. Helio had a standing challenge open to practitioners of all styles, irrespective of size, weight or musculature. This tradition of open challenge has been continued by the Gracie family and their students for over 70 years. At present Rickson Gracie is widely accepted as the greatest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technician and is considered the best fighter in the world. He holds a career record of over 400 victories and no losses.

According to some historians, Jiu-Jitsu is a gentle art and its origins can be traced to India where Buddhist Monks were known to practice it. Self defense was a matter of concern to them and so they created techniques based on principles of balance and leverage. They also fashioned a system of manipulation of the body in such a manner that there was no dependence on strength or weapons. Buddhism was spreading far and wide and with this the art of Jiu-Jitsu also spread from Southeast Asia to China. It finally reached Japan where it prospered and gained a lot of popularity.
