Capoeria

The creation of Capoeira credited to the African slaves imported by the Portuguese in the early 1500's. Beginning 1814, Capoeira and other forms of African cultural expressions were forbidden by the slave masters and overseers. Slavery was abolished in 1888 but the newly freed slaves had no place in the existing socioeconomic order. Hence capoeiristas were turning to which led to the association Capoeira with criminality. However, in Bahia, Capoeira was developing into a ritual-dance-fight-game. The African instrument called the Berimbau became indispensable in the Rodas.

In 1932 Mestre Bimba or Manuel dos Reis Machado 1900-1974 commenced with the first Capoeira academy. The Getulio Vargas government put in a lot of effort to promote Capoeira as a Brazilian sport. Bimba sacrificed a lot the ritual aspect for a more aggressive and fighting spirit. The new style was named Capoeira Regional.
